FAQs
What services do you provide?
Northern Comfort Log Homes specializes in crafting the log shell of full scribed round log homes as well as dovetail timber homes. The log shell consists of:
- the log walls
- log floor joists for the second floor (if included in the plans)
- log roof support system (Post & Purlin, Log Ridge, Log or Timber Frame Trusses)
- pressure wash and borate treatment of logs before shipping
- installation of all windows and doors after roof system has been installed
We handcraft your home in our log yard in Goulais River, Ontario. [See Map] All of the log pieces are then numbered, disassembled and shipped to your site where we restack your home over the course of several days. You or your general contractor will co-ordinate all of the other sub-trade work that will then occur (electrical, plumbing, carpenters, etc.).
What type of logs do you use?
Northern Comfort uses mostly red and white pine logs in the walls of our buildings. White spruce is often used as ridge logs and purlins. Eastern white cedar is used for posts, railings and spindles. We prefer to cut our logs in the winter prior to the year of constructing your home. The moisture content of the logs is naturally low at this time of year. We do not kiln dry our logs. Our building techniques (underscribed saddle notch) allow for the shrinkage and setting that will naturally occur in your log home. Each log is hand peeled giving your home a hand-made, custom look.
What type of finishes do you use on the logs?
There are many excellent products on the market today from which to choose. We have had excellent results with Sansin Products as well as Sikkens Products. Once these products are applied very little maintenance is required; possibly a recoating every 3 to 7 years depending on exposure to the elements.
How long does it take to build a log home?
The time it takes to build your log home will depend on the size of the building but generally a 3,000 square foot shell would take approximately 3 months to build. As the planning and blueprint stage can take up to six months, it is best to start planning approximately a year before the desired completion date. Once the log shell is on your site, the finishing work can from 3 months to 1 year depending on how much is contracted out.
Do you design our home?
We craft homes from custom plans that are provided by our clients. Quite often we can work from a hand drawn sketch that has been prepared by the client. We enjoy working with our clients providing advice on what would or would not work in their home. If the home is more complex, we may recommend that you contract with a log home designer or an architect so that you can incorporate the features that you would like in your home. We can refer you to professionals who can help you with your plans.
How much will our home cost?
Cost figures for a Northern Comfort Log Home vary depending on:
- the complexity of the plan
- the number of notches
- lineal footage of logs
- the diameter of the logs
- the number of custom features
- quality of the finishing materials.
